Albuquerque Press Women & Friends Meeting

At the Monday, October 11, 12:00 noon Zoom meeting of Albuquerque Press Women and Friends, Sara Solovitch, Executive Director and editor of Searchlight New Mexico, will discuss Searchlight New Mexico, an independent nonprofit investigative news organization based in Santa Fe.

Searchlight New Mexico launched 3 1/2 years ago in the belief that great reporting can motivate New Mexicans to confront racial and economic inequities, government corruption and negligence, and abuses of power. They distribute their stories free to all newspapers in New Mexico as well as radio, TV and digital platforms. Their work also appears in a wide array of national publications, including The Guardian, Rolling Stones, Texas Observer, Indian Country Today, and the USA Today Network. The staff of 11 has won numerous national awards, but is especially proud of the recognition they’ve received here in New Mexico.

Solovitch supervised its launch in January 2018 with the Child Well-Being Project, an investigation into the plight of children and families in New Mexico. Before coming to Searchlight, she published investigative and long-form stories in Esquire, Wired, Politico, and the Washington Post. As a staff reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer, she covered education, courts and special projects. A former health columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, Solovitch also has traveled throughout New Mexico and Alaska while reporting for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on health care in under-served areas. Her book, Playing Scared: A History and Memoir of Stage Fright, was published by Bloomsbury in 2015.
