by Margaret Cheasebro, NMPW High School Communications Contest Coordinator
Teri Ehresman, the NFPW high school communications contest director, has let me know the results of the competition for New Mexico high school students.
New Mexico had one first place award in the at-large competition that advanced to the national competition, but it did not win a national award.
In the at-large competition, students also won four 2nd place awards, two 3rd place awards, and six honorable mentions. All the winners were from the Albuquerque School of Excellence and were connected with the school’s newspaper, The Phoenix Times.
The first place at-large winner was Brandon Evans for a double-truck layout.
The four 2nd place awards were won for three opinion pieces and one radio/television interview or talk show.
The two 3rd place awards were for one single page layout and one opinion piece.
The six honorable mentions were for two editorials, two double truck layouts, one newscast, and one news story.
The Albuquerque School of Excellence staff member who oversees student involvement with The Phoenix Times is Ma. Gloria King. Her email address is mking@abqse.org.
