NMPW Board Officers

    Jenny Kinsey

    President

    Jenny Kinsey is a reporter for the Mountain West News Bureau based at KANW in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has worked as a freelance journalist and has authored many articles on the issues of aging and caregiving. Jenny holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and political science from East Texas A&M University. She is the At-Large Newsline Coordinator for the New Mexico Commission for the Blind, leading volunteers recording publications. Jenny is the author of Eldercare in Texas: A Family Resource Guide (Rowman & Littlefield, 2003), a practical guide for those caring for aging parents. She worked as a licensed nursing home administrator in New Mexico and Texas for over a decade. Her doctoral studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock included coursework in gerontology.

      Shannon Kunkel

      Vice President

      Shannon Kunkel is a native of Albuquerque and has spent nearly two decades working in the non-profit and public sectors, managing communications, membership, and marketing efforts for a variety of organizations. She is currently an advancement officer for Meals on Wheels New Mexico. In 2025, she served briefly as Press Secretary for the City of Albuquerque, Office of the Mayor. Her prior experience includes community outreach and development roles with Common Cause New Mexico, the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, and the Albuquerque Journal. Shannon graduated summa cum laude from the University of New Mexico with a degree in mass communications and journalism and an emphasis in advertising. Shannon is dedicated to democracy and creating a future where all New Mexicans have the opportunity to thrive.

      Ruth E. Thaler-Carter

      Secretary

      Ruth E. Thaler-Carter, NMPW secretary and Communicator of
      Achievement chair, is an award-winning writer/editor who has been writing for
      pay since high school and freelancing full-time since 1984, after in-house communications
      positions at a weekly Black newspaper, international magazine, trade
      association, and public hospital. Ruth is active in SouthWest Writers, New
      Mexico Writers, the Cat Writers’ Association, National Association of
      Independent Writers & Editors, Society of Professional
      Journalists/Freelance Community, and Editorial Freelancers Association.

        Athena Christodoulou

        Treasurer

        Athena Christodoulou is a retired Navy Commander (2005) who has Engineering and Science degrees from North Carolina State University, UCF, and UNM. Her journalism experience includes writing electronic newsletters for her Google app, Udorami. Athena currently serves as CEO and is relaunching this Swiss Army knife of list making. She also wrote speeches and newsletters for campaigns for the NM legislative office, advocacy speeches for environmental issues, and Op-Eds to various local media.

        Rosa Armijo Pemble

        Public Relations / Social Media Director

        Rosa B. Armijo-Pemble is a visual storyteller known for her emotional depth, passion, and unique, artistic vision, has a BS in Technical Communications from NM Institute of Mining and Technology. Publications include cover art for SouthWest Writers’ SAGE Challenges trilogy; essay in Unbreaking the Circle: Voices of the Military, their Families & Caregivers; poetry in The Untold Stories, an Armed Services Arts Partnership anthology; and her piece in the Holes in Our Hearts anthology won a NMPW Communications award. Finally, Rosa’s work is a part of the Bernalillo County Public Art Permanent Collection.

          Sherry Robinson

          Historian

          Sherry Robinson is an award-winning author and journalisst. She is the author of several books, including I Fought a Good Fight: A History of the Lipan Apaches and Apache Voices: Their Stories of Survial as Tol to Eve Ball (UNM Press). 

          Regina M. Griego

          Immediate Past President

          Regina is a coach, author, speaker, and retired from a distinguished career as an engineer. Regina wrote the award-winning best-seller Sins of the System: Trauma, Guns, Tragedy, and the Betrayal of Our Children, which won the NMPW and NFPW Communications Contest 1st Place for Memoir/ Autobiography and Winner for Social Change in the International Book Awards.

          Denise Chavez

          SNMPW Director at Large

          Denise Chavez is a Chicana author, bookseller, and activist from southern New Mexico. Denise writes about families in New Mexico and the U.S. Border. She has received various awards, including the New Mexico Governor’s Award, The American Book Award, the Premio Aztlán Literary Prize, and the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, among others.

          Catherine Lynch

          Communication Contests Co-Director

          Catherine Lynch serves in Communications, Media and Data Analysis for the First Judicial District Attorney in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Catherine has worked in various aspects of the film production and creative industries, applying her skills of storytelling such as teaching, coaching, directing, casting, marketing, public relations, video editing and design. Known for her innovative approach and leadership skills, her diverse experience ranges from small independent projects to large-scale commercial productions.

          Carolyn Carlson

          Communication Contests Co-Director

          Carolyn Carlson is an award-winning journalist covering local government for over 30 years in Central New Mexico. Carolyn is the former owner/publisher of The Estancia Valley/Torrance County Citizen, and a veteran of the Albuquerque Journal, Weekly Alibi, The Paper and City Desk ABQ. She served as past NMPW Communications Contest Director for seven years.
