Andy Lyman – NM Political Report

Journalists Steve Terrell from the Santa Fe New Mexican and Andy Lyman from New Mexico Political Report will speak to Albuquerque Press Women on Monday, January 9 at the Golden Corral at 5207 San Mateo Blvd. NE at 11:45 a.m.

They are both covering the 2017 session of the New Mexico legislature and will share their observations about what lawmakers must get done and issues that they are likely to see brought up before them. This is expected to be a difficult session of the legislature since covering the budget will be the greatest challenge. Will we see new taxes proposed or tax credits eliminated? There have already been bills to do such diverse things as setting up a legislative ethics committee and increasing penalties for certain crimes. Expect a lively discussion and some interesting answers from these two veteran journalists.

Golden Corral is a new location for Albuquerque Press Women. This restaurant is on San Mateo north of Montgomery, and south of Cliff’s Amusement Park. It has a private dining area and we will be in the private area. Everyone is welcome. Non-members will be asked to pay an additional five dollars.

Anne Hillerman, member of the Santa Fe chapter leadership team. was honored with a Founders 10th Anniversary Award for her novel “Rocks with Wings” (Harper Collins; 2015).

Sharon Niederman, NMPW board member, received a first place award for her cookbook “New Mexico Farm Table Cookbook” (The Countryman Press; 2015).

Loretta Hall, NMPW president, received a first place award in the Travel category for her book, “The Complete Space Buff’s Bucket List” (Rio Grande Books).

Cynthia Hall

Cynthia Hall, newly elected commissioner to the Public Regulation Commission will speak on “Demystifying the Public Regulation Commission” at the regular meeting on December 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the Claim Jumper restaurant (5001 Jefferson NE).

The PRC is one of the most important commissions in New Mexico. It regulates issues related to utilities, telecommunication and transportation. Hall is a former staff attorney for the commission. She will speak about the challenges the PRC faces in controversial areas such as coal versus renewable sources of energy in the state’s energy picture.

Everyone is welcome. Non-members will be charged an additional $5 over the $15. meal. A $10 salad bar option is also available.

Albuquerque Press Women and Friends is formed primarily of people interested in or working in some aspect of the communications industry. It is a good place to meet people interested in the many facets of the business of communication in New Mexico.

Come talk over the election results and coming legislative session with lively speakers Alan Webber and Janice Arnold Jones on Monday, November 14 at 11:45 at the Claim Jumper restaurant (5001 Jefferson NE.) We order lunch from the menu.

Both Arnold Jones, a republican, and Webber, a democrat, have been candidates for governor of New Mexico in the past. They are both articulate, witty and keen observers of the political scene in the state. It’s a perfect opportunity to recover from the national election and to take another look at what is on the horizon for New Mexico in the coming legislative session.

Webber’s career includes an extended stint as managing editor and editorial director of the Harvard Business Review; co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of Fast Company magazine; and other service in business and government. He now heads a nonprofit organization called One New Mexico.

Loretta Hall

Loretta Hall, the president of New Mexico Press Women, will speak to the Santa Fe Press Women on Saturday, November 12 at noon. Her talk is titled Getting Men to the Moon: Behind the Scenes Stories.

The group meets at Joe’s Dining on Rodeo Road in Santa Fe. Joe’s charges an automatic 24% gratuity to assist with the costs of the room and equipment. Santa Fe Press Women are asking attendees to RSVP in advance.

Loretta Hall is the author of two award-winning space history books. Out of this World: New Mexico‘s Contributions to Space Travel recounts the stories of New Mexico people and programs that played crucial roles in the development of manned spaceflight and, more recently, the commercial space industry.Space Pioneers: In Their Own Words presents annotated excerpts from oral history interviews with ninety men and women who worked on various space programs from 1945 through the space shuttle era.

Her newest book, The Complete Space Buff’s Bucket List: 100 Space Things to Do Before You Die is a finalist in the 2016 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards. Loretta is a Space Ambassador for the National Space Society and the current president of New Mexico Press Women.
